Your Skin Microbiome

For a long time, skin was treated like a surface to be scrubbed and sanitized. We now know it's a thriving ecosystem — and that working with it beats trying to sterilize it.

What's actually going on

Your skin hosts trillions of microorganisms — bacteria, fungi, viruses, and mites — collectively the skin microbiome. Many are commensals that benefit you. Staphylococcus epidermidis helps fend off pathogens; Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) helps keep the acid mantle acidic. In balance, this community crowds out harmful microbes and helps regulate your skin's immune responses.

Why it matters: "antibacterial everything" backfires

When you attack your face with harsh, stripping, or aggressively antibacterial products, you don't selectively remove "bad" microbes — you flatten the whole community, helpful residents included. That opens the door to opportunistic overgrowth, increases irritation, and disrupts the barrier. It also reframes acne: C. acnes lives on virtually everyone, including people with clear skin, so acne is driven by excess sebum, clogged follicles, inflammation, and a shift in local microbial balance — not mere bacterial presence. "Kill all bacteria" approaches often fail or worsen things because they ignore the real drivers.

How to support it

A slightly acidic, intact acid mantle is exactly the environment a healthy microbiome needs, so the same gentle habits protect both: pH-appropriate cleansing, sensible actives, and not over-stripping. The pre- and post-biotic skincare category holds some genuinely promising ingredients alongside a lot of marketing — but the foundation is free. Protect your barrier and you feed the microbes that protect you.

What the evidence says

The role of the skin microbiome in barrier and immune health is a major, active area of dermatology research (see Byrd, Belkaid & Segre, "The human skin microbiome," Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2018). Modern acne science treats the condition as multifactorial — sebum, follicular hyperkeratinization, inflammation, and C. acnes strain balance — which is why current guidelines pair agents like benzoyl peroxide and retinoids rather than trying to sterilize skin.
