The Acid Mantle & Your Skin's pH

Your skin's surface isn't pH-neutral — it's slightly acidic, and that's a feature, not a flaw. This acidity comes from the "acid mantle," and protecting it is one of the most underrated habits in skincare.

What's actually going on

The acid mantle is a fine film of sebum, sweat, and skin lipids that coats the surface of the stratum corneum at a pH of roughly 4.7 to 5.5. That mild acidity does real work: it discourages pathogenic bacteria, keeps the enzymes that maintain and repair your barrier functioning, and helps a balanced microbiome thrive.

Why it matters: cleansers and actives

Traditional bar soaps are often strongly alkaline (pH 9–10). Washing with them strips the acid mantle and temporarily raises your skin's pH — the "tight, squeaky" feeling — after which skin can overproduce oil and barrier repair slows. pH also decides whether key actives perform: L-ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) needs a low, acidic pH (~3–3.5) to stay stable and absorb, and AHAs and BHA exfoliate best in a mildly acidic environment. Cleanse with something alkaline and immediately layer an acid-dependent active, and you've shifted your surface pH the wrong way and blunted it.

How to protect it

The practical move is gentle, pH-appropriate cleansing. A well-formulated "pH-balanced" cleanser cleans effectively while staying close to skin's natural ~5.5, avoiding the strip-and-rebound cycle. You don't need special products to "restore" pH — skin does that on its own over a few hours — you mainly need to stop knocking it out of range with harsh soaps and over-washing.

What the evidence says

Measurements of skin-surface pH consistently place healthy skin in the acidic 4.5–5.5 range (Lambers et al., International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2006, found the true average sits below 5). Research links a disrupted, more alkaline surface pH to impaired barrier function and altered microbial balance — the evidence base behind the shift away from high-pH soaps toward gentler, acidic cleansers.
