The Layers of Your Skin
Skin is an organ — your largest — built in three layers, each with a different job. Understanding them is the fastest way to tell a real product claim from a fantasy one.
What's actually going on: three layers
The epidermis is the part you can see and touch. Its outermost section, the stratum corneum, is made of dead, flattened corneocytes embedded in a lipid matrix — the famous "brick and mortar." This is your skin barrier: it keeps water from escaping and microbes and irritants from getting in. Beneath it, living keratinocytes mature and flatten as they rise, and at the very bottom — the basal layer — new keratinocytes are made, alongside the melanocytes that produce pigment. Below the epidermis is the dermis, and beneath that the hypodermis (mostly fat, for insulation and cushioning).
Why it matters: the dermis and aging
The dermis is the thick layer that holds collagen and elastin (firmness and bounce), the fibroblasts that produce them, blood vessels, nerve endings, and your sebaceous and sweat glands. Almost everything we call "aging" — fine lines, sagging, loss of elasticity — happens here, largely because UV breaks down collagen faster than fibroblasts can rebuild it. Loss of fat and support in the hypodermis adds the "deflated" look that no cream reaches. This is why sun protection is the most powerful anti-aging step there is.
What it means for your products
Every topical negotiates with the stratum corneum first. Small, oil-friendly molecules pass more easily; large or very water-loving ones largely stay near the surface. That is why "rebuilds collagen deep in the dermis overnight" is almost always overstated: the ingredients that genuinely influence the dermis (like retinoids) do it indirectly and slowly, by signaling cells to behave differently — not by traveling deep and depositing there. Knowing this lets you read a claim and ask whether it even makes physical sense.
What the evidence says
Skin histology — the three-layer structure, the brick-and-mortar stratum corneum, and the basal location of keratinocyte and melanocyte production — is standard, well-established anatomy taught in dermatology and esthetics (Milady). Decades of photoaging research show that UV-driven collagen breakdown in the dermis is a primary driver of visible aging, which is why broad-spectrum sun protection is the single best-supported "anti-aging" intervention.
